Free Software for Internet Businesses
5 May 2008 – 3:09 pmHere’s a great post by Terry Dean: 21 Free Software Resources.
I have tried, still use, and am a satisfied customer of Google Analytics, Gmail and Skype.
As a technically-challenged person, I will have to say that Wordpress still leaves me cold. I have been overdue making the latest update for Wordpress on my three blogs for a few weeks now. I just don’t want to take my whole evening and risk the content I have built up with a failure of some sort. And no, this or that plug-in is not the answer. I would go back to Blogger if I did not fear the loss of my content.

Hi Matia,
I’m pretty tech-savvy, and still, I’ve always been a bit paranoid about upgrading WordPress for the same reasons.
For me, a nice cure for my “headache” was a couple of those “this or that plug-ins” that you asked not to bother mentioning.
Just FYI – I use “WordPress Database Backup” by Austin Matzko just in case something ever gets hosed after an upgrade. It’s a smart idea to regularly backup your database anyway & not just for upgrade purposes.
Then I use “Instant Upgrade” by Alex Günsche, which allows me to upgrade my WordPress with just one click of a button. After 4 upgrades, I’ve never encountered even a single glitch.
Because of these two handy plug-ins, upgrading now only involves a click of a button and a few seconds of my time.

My problem with plug-ins is the instructions are sometimes even more complex than those for a WordPress upgrade — which I have actually managed to pull off successfully a couple of times. Thanks for dropping in, Jack.
